Rethinking Dr. Seuss
As people look towards Read Across America, you may remember that in the past Dr. Seuss has been used as a teaching tool and a way to celebrate reading. It’s 2021, and we know that Dr. Seuss was racist and included racist imagery in many of his published works. Read Across America 2021 is focused on “creating and celebrating a nation of diverse readers.” At Goethe, we cannot say that “Black Lives Matter” during Black history month, and then celebrate a known racist as soon as the month has ended. It is time to rethink using (or how you use; i.e, teachable moments about racism) Dr. Seuss in your classroom. There are many other books that teach the same skills and lessons!
