Teaching moment❕Presidential Debate 2020
When Joe Biden and Donald Trump were confronted with the topic of racism in America, both candidates immediately directed the conversation toward crime and poverty. Let’s be clear, the war on drugs and mass incarceration is definitely a direct correlation to systemic racism.
With that said, there are Black and brown people in all walks of life, with various careers and SES, who deal with racism and discrimination everyday throughout America.
Teachers and parents, when discussing race and inclusion with your children, please do not talk about Black and Brown folx as if we are low class, poverty stricken criminals who need saving❗️❗️❗️
✨Highlight the beauty in our diversity and cultures. Celebrate our accomplishments and our joys. Speak about us as if you see us. And when referring to how we deal with discrimination, understand that it is because of the colors of our skin, our dialect/ language, our uniqueness that is feared or misunderstood. Discrimination is why we have to have THE TALK with our children, and why we have to assimilate and make ourselves more palatable for job interviews, and STILL might not get the job. Discrimination is why our cultures are appropriated and not celebrated. Discrimination and Racism is what needs to be addressed in the police force, in the workplace, in schools, in government, and in society as a whole.
Don’t make it about us, this is not an us problem. Don’t make this about crime and drugs. It’s so much more than that. Put some respect on what we persevere through! Focus on what YOU can do to break patterns and even the playing field. ✊🏽
